The Crying Idol is an older Egmont story previously unpublished here in Australia. This particular story was written by the prolific Claes Reimerthi and is well supported by the comic art skills of Georges Bess. Bess was a French comic artist who studied art in Paris and found his way to Team Fantomen as a Phantom artist in 1976. Reimerthi requires little introduction having written hundreds of Phantom stories over a long and illustrious career. The Fantomen cover from 1985 was illustrated by none other than Norwegian artist Knut Westad. Knut met Lee Falk in the 70’s when Lee visited Norway. Lee was impressed by his art and offered him encouragement at the time, after which he successfully approached Team Fantomen. He drew his first Phantom story in 1979. Two pieces of his remarkable work made it into our 80th Anniversary Issue, Deadly Cargo and Environmental Avenger both pieces demonstrate a remarkable and unique Phantom style.
