In this Issue we bring you the much anticipated part 2 of Raiders of the Lost City. Arctic Oil is once again funding an expedition to discover the lost City of Z in the hope of recovering and harnessing the alternate energy source that has been used to power and protect this ancient civilization for generations. The Phantom’s long standing friendship with the young ethnologist Minerva, whose grandfather disappeared on a previous expedition draws him into this adventure. The Phantom follows in order to ensure that no harm befalls her. As they battle through the jungle they do indeed uncover some hidden wonders from a bygone period in the earths history. As is often the case on such adventures the character flaws of men become increasingly accentuated and greed replaces humanity. It is just as well The Phantom is on hand to measure out some common sense.
This story was written by Claes Reimerthi and I am particularly intrigued by the way he has tapped into the historical myth that surrounds the mystery of Lt Colonel Percival Harrison Fawcett’s disappearance and brought it to The Phantom, providing us with a richly entertaining tale of jungle exploration, timeless ancient antiquity and frightening creatures of the Jurassic period that have no place being alive on our earth. All the graphic elements have been exquisitely handled by Alex Saviuk once again demonstrating his flair for a rollicking adventure story complete with ancient civilization, lost worlds and enormous beasts of prey.
To round out this edition is another new story to Frew by Germano Ferri. He was responsible for both story and art on The Lightning Egg. Ferri has been considered by many to be one of the finest pen men to ever work on The Phantom and the quality of his art is beyond question. The plot feels somewhat abbreviated in some way but it is never the less a mysterious story revolving around an ancient egg shaped diamond that gives off a deadly radioactive light that renders all who handle it dead or dying. Raimy Aldrey seeks out The Phantom’s help after her father was struck down by this object and lies in a critical condition.
The Lightning Egg has disappeared and in its place is none other than a symbol that closely resembles The Phantom’s good mark only it is not! What could all this mean and what does The Phantom have to do with it? Read on and find out. Will there be a sequel? Who knows, strange things happen in the jungles of Bengali! .
